If your car is moving at 65 MPH, in just three seconds you'll travel the length of a football field. That's why we want to help drivers keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel.
The Alliance supports a ban on hand-held texting and hand-held calling, while driving, to accelerate the transition to more advanced, safer ways to communicate.
Along with appropriate laws, we need highly visible enforcement and consumer awareness of the certainty of enforcement. For example, the federal "Click It or Ticket" campaign has been effective in raising awareness of enforcement of safety belt laws.
We need consumer education so drivers know that any action that prolongs a driver's "eyes off road" presents a risk, not just hand-held texting and hand-held calling, but also eating, drinking or searching for a CD. Since education is a priority, automakers support a range of safe driving initiatives, from awareness of risks to training of skills.
Digital technology has created a connected culture in America that has forever changed our society. Managing technology is the solution, so automakers developed Driver Focus Design Guidelines to help drivers keep their eyes on the road.
EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES:
OMG Campaign. "GET THE MESSAGE. TEXTING WHILE DRIVING IS A DEADLY DISTRACTION." The Alliance is helping sponsor this national educational program launched by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association.
Industry Driver Education Programs. Autos give us great mobility, but along with that benefit comes great responsibility to be vigilant every second behind the wheel. To encourage safe driving, automakers support a range of educational programs for young drivers...and their parents.
